About Durak

Durak is a traditional Russian card game that stands out for its mix of strategy and straightforward gameplay. Played with a reduced deck of 36 cards, Durak challenges players to be the first to discard all their cards while avoiding becoming the last player left with cards, who is known as the "durak" or fool. Typically designed for two to four participants, the game begins with each player dealt six cards and a trump suit revealed from the remaining deck.

The gameplay centers around a series of attacks and defenses: one player initiates by playing a card, and the next player must respond by beating that card with a higher card of the same suit or a trump card. If the defender successfully counters all attacks, the turn passes to them as the attacker. If not, they must pick up the cards played, putting them at a disadvantage. This dynamic continues in a cycle until only one player is left holding cards.

Durak's unique element lies in its use of a smaller deck and the particular mechanics of attacking and defending, which require players to think carefully about card management and timing. The game combines luck and tactical decision-making, making it engaging for those who enjoy strategic card challenges. Without extensive setup or complicated rules, Durak offers an accessible alternative for card game enthusiasts seeking something different from standard decks and familiar formats. Whether you come from a background of traditional card games or are trying Durak for the first time, the game offers a blend of simple rules with depth in how you choose to play your hand.

How to Play

Durak is played by 2 to 4 players. Total cards used are 36 cards - Only 6 7 8 9 10 J Q K A of all suits are used.

The deck is shuffled, and each player is dealt with 6 cards. The bottom card of the stock is turned and placed face up on the table. The rest of the pack is then placed on half over the turn-up and at right angles to it, so that it remains visible. The trump suit is drawn as the last card.

The first person to play is the one who holds the lowest trump suit in his hand. The game proceeds in a clockwise direction. The player who started to play acts as an attacker and the player sitting next to him in a clockwise direction acts as a defender.

The player who has the lowest trump card will be the first attacker. If the attack succeeds, the defender loses their turn, and the attack passes to the player on the defender's left. If the attack fails, the defender becomes the next attacker. The attacker opens their turn by playing a card face up on the table as an attacking card. Defender responds to the attack with a defending card. A trump card of any rank beats all cards in the other three suits

To win Durak, you need to play all your cards quickly. Once you have played your cards, you are out of the game and will need to wait for the rest of the players. The last player with cards in their hand loses.
